La Paz, meaning 'peace' in Spanish, is the capital of Baja California Sur state of Mexico. Located on the bay of Sea of Cortez, La Paz was first discovered by Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes. He named it Santa Cruz but abandoned it later. Spanish navigator Sebastian Vizcaino arrived here in 1596, and renamed the bay as La Paz. Once a simple spot for sport fishing, La Paz has now evolved as a hot spot for ecotourism. It is one of the most famous cruising destinations in the Baja California peninsula as it boasts beautiful sandy beaches, fiery sunsets, gorgeous blue waters and amazing rocky shores. Its proximity to the Magdalena Bay, pristine islands of the Sea of Cortez, Puerto Vallarta and Sierra de la Laguna mountains attracts whale watchers, hikers, scuba divers and adventure seekers alike. Below you will find highlights of the surrounding natural beauty and best charter destinations in and around La Paz and the Sea of Cortez.
